Ireland (nurses): no 12-month practice step; NMBI asks for none

Irish nurse plans no longer show "at least 12 months of practice within the last five years". NMBI's own guide and FAQ for nurses trained outside the EU set no minimum or recent practice period; the rule came from a consultancy guide. Work since you qualified still helps, because NMBI's assessor may weigh it against gaps in your training.

What it means for you

Ireland (NMBI)

The step "At least 12 months of practice as a nurse within the last five years" is gone from the Irish nurse plan. It was marked as reported by recruiters, not confirmed. On 3 November 2026 we read NMBI's Applicant User Guide (Qualified Outside Ireland) and its FAQ for applicants trained outside the EU again, and neither sets a minimum or recent practice period: the recognition application asks for your nursing work since you qualified, and lets you say you have none. A nurse who last practised more than five years ago, or who has worked less than a year, no longer sees the step, and for some of them the Irish route is now open.

What NMBI does with your experience

Each employer since you qualified fills in NMBI's employment form. NMBI's education assessor may weigh that experience against gaps in your training when deciding whether you need an adaptation placement or the RCSI aptitude test; without the forms it is not considered. Your college and employers return their forms to you and you upload them, so the recognition step no longer says they send them to NMBI directly.

What stays the same

The only practice period NMBI sets for nurses trained outside the EU is three years' registered practice in the last five in a majority English-speaking country, which replaces the English test. The fees, the other steps and the typical time do not change.

What to do next

Tell us where you trained, your English and the countries you want, and we show which steps you have left in each, with every fee and how long it takes.
